Kylian Mbappe is a Real Madrid player [, for real], in his first game as one he scored two goals to secure a 2-0 win over rivals at the Santiago Bernabeu [Real Betis]. However, Mbappe will set off with Los Blancos and whether or not the French superstar can either emulate Cristiano Ronaldo by following in his footsteps marker enduring his legacy as Karim Benzema did.

Mbappe struck his first goal at the Bernabeu in a typically scintillating fashion. His came via a wonderful backheel from Fede Valverde, but all he needed to do was sprint past his marker and strike the ball home; it looked as easy for him as so many Ronaldo goals had been at this stadium. Mbappe’s playing style, even his characteristic celebration has drawn comparisons to Ronaldo as he replays the same flair and finishing traits of that old Portugal legend.

Still, the formation of Real Madrid to date suggests Mbappe is not going to fill a position exactly replicating that left open by Ronaldo. Whereas Vinicius Junior has made the left-wing position his own, winning two Champions League titles so far and coming on to score in Friday’s Copa del Rey final against Barcelona, Mbappe will find himself operating and affecting games slightly differently. Vinicius Jr.
letting Mbappe take a penalty v Real Betis displays that collaborative vibe, and indicates the new No 9 will have room to shine without impeding on what others bring too.
A Role Fit for Benzema?
Mbappe described himself as a “big fan” of Ronaldo, laconically adding: “For me he’s the greatest.” But it appears Mbappe may have to tweak his style to tread on Benzema territory. He was also a Swiss Army knife of sorts for the former Ronaldo strike partner and key man alongside Vinicius Jr.
He may have been a prolific scorer but Benzema could also create goals – the Frenchman provided plenty of assists as well, in addition to displaying some sublime dribbling and hold-up play.
The problem for Mbappe could be blending the best of Ronaldo going forward with Benzema all-round. Mbappe received criticism for putting the team 2nd to his stats much like Ronaldo used to at PSG. But Mbappe, like Ronaldo, has room to grow. He will have to similarly adjust his genius by combining it with a larger measure of team play, similar to Benzema.
The Balancing Act: Ronaldo and Benzema Together?
Mbappe’s mission is to blend the best qualities of two past Real Madrid superstars He can imitate the Ronaldo way with skill moves and surgical shooting. But he has to evolve in that at his core, Benz must bring defenders away from him; and make room for others as well if you are going to be THE striker centrally.
If he does arrive in Madrid, the fact Vinicius Jr. has cemented himself on the left and Rodrygo Goes showed his aptitude to play on that side or switch to the right means Mbappe must be able (another thing…) at playing centrally as well as fitting into any setup perfectly with minimal disruption of another player’s game up front.
And the good news is he is more than capable of meeting this challenge having earned his stripes as a two-time WC finalist and an all-type-goa-getter across several Leagues.
The Future for Mbappe
Kylian Mbappe wants to have the iconic presence of Cristiano Ronaldo and also take on the versatile brilliance that Karim Benzema used when he entered a new chapter with Real Madrid. His legacy will ultimately depend on how well he can meld those influences with his own and leave a mark at the Bernabeu. Along with his incredible skill and burning desire to be the best, Mbappe is destined for greatness at Real Madrid.
