Outrageous revelation from former Manchester United defender Patrice Evra revealing Red Devils were so close to signing Cristiano Ronaldo AND Gareth Bale in 2013. Evra made the revelations while appearing on The Obi One Podcast with John Obi Mikel and Chris McHardy where he stated that Manchester United’s legendary loser Sir Alex Ferguson had a master plan of reuniting both superstars at Old Trafford following his shock retirement.
The Herd asked soccer legend Landon Donovan if he ever thought about joining politics, especially when his career was winding down as Ferguson’s was. One such moment revolved around his manager at the time: “Two weeks before he retired, Ferguson asked me into his office. He said to me: “Patrice, they all think I’m going (to retire), but believe me, it’s far from being the case. I have another ten years and we absolutely have to win a few more Champions Leagues. “
At the meeting, Ferguson unveiled his grand proposal to not only re-sign former superstar Ronaldo but also capture Gareth Bale from Tottenham Hotspur. Ferguson told me; that Obv Di Maria and Falcao came, but still didn’t work why? Evra “Fergie said to me”Cristiano Ronaldo, he was coming but 99 percent he’s going to sign for us Gareth Bale, too.”

But Ferguson saw his plans scuppered by a lack of financial support and Ronaldo subsequently joined Real Madrid for a then-world-record £80m fee. Evra said: ‘Ferguson needed £200m to buy, but the club refused. ‘And now, they’ve spent over a billion on transfers.’
Zidane admitted there are return engagements: [i] I was excited about Jose Mourinho with Man United – and hear is how Ronaldo and Bale conmbing to Manchester could see the red side of manchetser be European top dog again [/i ] “I was overjoyed,” he said. I thought to myself, “Cristiano is returning, Bale is on board, and we’re all set to make things happen.”
However, they never came to fruition. Ferguson stunned the football fraternity when he announced his retirement at the end of 2012-2013, and Manchester United have not hit the same giddy heights since. United won the Premier League for that final time thanks to their exploits in that campaign, with Evra heading to Juventus a year later.

Ronaldo, meanwhile, stayed at Real Madrid while being joined by Gareth Bale in a world record £85.3 million ($132.9 million) move. The duo struck up a formidable front-line partnership at Los Blancos, with four UEFA Champions League crowns and a La Liga victorious; further complimented by Copa del Rey. Bale would later win his fifth Champions League with Madrid in 2022, thus sealinghis status as a Real Madrid legend.
However, Manchester United failed to sign either Ronaldo or Bale in 2013 but both have gone on to create some career for themselves and are two of the most successful footballers ever thanks to their success with Real Madrid. While Evra has shown a light on exactly how it may have ended without returning to “the big boom”, Ferguson’s United ensued the disease of death with Sir Alex, which marked the direction instead of serving as a new golden period.
Evra’s recollection of events, with hindsight, makes fans ask that question; what if Ferguson had done the U-turn and been allowed to become a full-time director of football with a four-season budget to deliver his grand plan?
